Volunteer Spotlight -
Malcolm & Ella Henderson

“Just do it! That’s what I tell my friends. It will be a rewarding experience not only for you but think of what you’re giving to the child.” Ella echoes, “You will not only be a blessing to the child, you will be blessed in the process.”

Our Story

Of their 55 years together, they’ve spent the past seven advocating for children in foster care. Warmth and kindness radiates from the couple for whom volunteerism has always been a part of their lives. Malcolm and Ella Henderson received a post card in the mail one day advertising the need for CASA volunteers and it touched their hearts in a way they knew they had to take action. Malcolm recalls, “after attending the presentation and hearing what CASA was about,we said we’re in, before that we had no idea what CASA was but that one postcard changed it all.” Beginning as volunteer advocates, the Henderson’s have since advanced to the elevated role of Peer Coach, assisting and overseeing other advocates within the organization.

Parents of three, grandparents of six, the Henderson’s are busy in retirement, not only giving their time to CASA but other volunteer missions as well. Ella recalls how a life of service began as a young high school student volunteering as a candy striper at her local hospital. She explains that time can be a challenge, but it’s overcome by commitment. Once you commit, it’s becomes a priority. Malcolm shares, “Volunteering is a part of our lives and provides a sense of peace. When you have been blessed, it’s important to give back and bless others.”

Regarding the qualities present in an advocate Malcolm cites empathy, compassion, patience and commitment. Ella adds understanding, respect, and emphasizes the importance of being non-judgmental. When asked about what you would tell those who are considering becoming an advocate, Malcolm reminded us of what Nike has been telling us for years, “Just do it! That’s what I tell my friends. It will be a rewarding experience not only for you but think of what you’re giving to the child.” Ella echoes, “You will not only be a blessing to the child, you will be blessed in the process.”

The Henderson’s agree that the most rewarding element is seeing a child achieve permanency, whether it be reunification, kinship, or adoption. Ella shares, “The children are our future and we very much want to make the future bright for our young children.”
